Maria Isabel Mourão Carvalhal was born in Vila Real in 1955. In 1977 she received her graduation in Physical Education from Instituto Nacional de Educação Física, Lisboa; in 1995 her master’s degree in Educational Sciences – Teaching Methodology of Physical Education from Faculdade Motricidade Humana, Lisboa; and in 2000, her PHD in Human Social Sciences, Physical Education and Sport from UTAD.
Since 2013, she is a retired associated professor, from Sport Sciences, Exercise and Health department from UTAD, where she worked for 27 years. She has edited and co-edited 8 books, and has over 66 publications in journals and 47 chapters in books.
Her current position is an associated member from Sport Science, Health and Human Development (CIDESD), at UTAD, and her research and publication interests include the study of child motor competence, physical activity, obesity and health. She currently works on projects related to physical activity and health.
