Maria João Lagoa was born in 1981, in Porto. Graduated in 2005, with distinction (Maiêutica Award) in Physical Education and Sports at University Institute of Maia (ISMAI). Completed his Masters degree (2009) and in 2017 concluded PhD in Physical Activity and Health at the Faculty of Sport in University of Porto, with research grant by Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), integrated in CIAFEL. Completed an internship in Sport and Exercise Science-School of Life Science, Coventry University [Reino Unido].

Since 2005 she has been a university Professor at ISMAI, in the curricular units: Learning and Motor Development, Intervention Projects, Fitness and Gymnastics. It has areas of research interest in toddlers’ physical activity and sedentary behaviours in family context; motor competence; learning and motor development; paediatric obesity. Received the awards: honourable mention of research in paediatrics and better communication at the Portuguese society for obesity study.
