Keynote: Prescription of Precision Physical Exercise in Modern Medicine: Innovative Strategies to Optimize Health and Vitality

Mikel Izquierdo is a Full Professor in the Department of Health Sciences at the Public University of Navarra and a leading researcher in projects focused on the effects of strength training and the impact of physical exercise in various areas, such as aging, frailty, and specific conditions (diabetes, obesity, cognitive and functional decline). He currently leads the “Ejercicio Físico, Salud y Calidad de Vida EFIT” group at NAVARRABIOMED and collaborates with the CIBERFES at the Carlos III Health Institute. He has participated in European projects such as “Mid-Frail” and “DIABRAIL-LATAM” and is the scientific director of the VIVIFRAIL project. Since 2018, he has been an external advisor to the WHO, supporting the implementation of exercise programs to prevent frailty. With over 501 published articles, 40,000 citations, and an H-index of 105, he has supervised over 40 doctoral theses and secured over 2.5 million euros in funding.

Keynote: Clinical applications of the anti-inflammatory effects of exercise

Nicolette (Lettie) Bishop is Professor of Exercise Immunology in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University. Lettie’s research interests lie in the impacts of exercise on immunity, inflammation, and infection in the general population and those with long-term conditions. Recent and current research focusses on the role of active lifestyles on immunity and inflammation in patients with all stages of kidney disease, those with inflammatory arthritis, and patients recovering from severe COVID-19 infection.
Lettie’s recent projects have received funding from NIHR, Wellcome, Heart Research UK, the National Axial Spondyloarthritis Society and Yakult Honsha. Lettie is a core investigator in the Lifestyle Theme of the 31.7 million euro National Institute of Health Research-funded Leicester Biomedical Research Centre. She has published over 130 peer-reviewed journal articles, editorials, book chapters and review articles, with recent articles published in Nature Reviews Nephrology and Lancet Digital Health.

Keynote: Transferring Science into Sports Excellence. The example of a Swimming Olympic Champion

Adrian Rădulescu is a Romanian swimming coach and a higher education lecturer. He holds a PhD in sports science focusing his research on the physiological and metabolic dynamics of young swimmers and contributing as an author and co-author to various studies, books and publications. Adrian’s dedication has been instrumental in the success of swimmers as David Popovici, whom he coached to Olympic title and world-record achievements in freestyle swimming. Adrian is also the co-founder of GRUNT project, a self-financed program aimed to contribute to a better support system for Romanian swimmers and coaches.
Beyond his professional achievements, Adrian enjoys pursuing the personal challenge of reaching the Top 1000 in the Fantasy Premier League.

Keynote: Functional reserve: a new variable in exercise performance

Jose A. López Calbet is a Professor of Exercise Physiology at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain) and coordinates the research group on Sports Performance, Physical Activity, and Health. With a background in Medicine, Surgery, and Physical Education, he obtained his Ph.D. in 1993 and completed his postdoctoral studies at the Copenhagen Muscle Research Centre under the guidance of Bengt Saltin, maintaining collaboration with this center to this day. His research focuses on cardiovascular responses to exercise and the benefits of physical activity in obesity, as well as studying the molecular mechanisms of leptin in human skeletal muscle. With over 180 published scientific articles and involvement in more than 30 projects, Calbet serves on the editorial boards of renowned scientific journals and is a reviewer for several prestigious international journals.

Keynote: “Moving Through Cancer – from Research to Practice”

Anna Campbell is a trained immunologist/biochemist turned expert in exercise science, focusing on the physical and psychological effects of exercise for cancer survivors. Since obtaining an MSc in Sport and Exercise Science in 2000, she has published over 90 papers, three book chapters and a textbook “Essentials in Exercise Oncology”, developed pragmatic interventions for cancer patients, and explored exercise’s impact on fitness, well-being, and quality of life across various cancer types. She bridges academia and practice by collaborating with health and fitness professionals, creating exercise resources like DVDs, founding the UK’s first free community exercise program for cancer survivors, and establishing CanRehab, which trains fitness and allied health professionals for post-cancer diagnosis care. She also established a charity connecting patients with exercise specialists, contributes to the WHO World Rehabilitation Alliance 2030 group, and oversees an MSc program at Edinburgh Napier University focused on clinical exercise science. Additionally, she advises on the NHS Prehabilitation Programme in Scotland.

Keynote: Contribution of motivational climate to well-being and optimal functioning in sport

Isabel Balaguer is Emeritus Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Valencia in Spain and the Director of the Sports Psychology Research Unit (UIPD) at the same university. Professor Balaguer is a full member of the Spanish Academy of Psychology. Currently she teaches postgraduate courses. She has published books, book chapters, and scientific articles and has actively participated in scientific conferences. She has led various research projects, both national and international. Her applied work complements her academic and research activities. She has worked for several years with the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation and the Tennis Masters School. She is a member of several national and international scientific societies and serves as an editor for various scientific journals.

Keynote: Monitoring Strategies in Team Sports: Readiness and Fatigue

João Ribeiro owns a BSc (2006) in Sport and Physical Education, a MSc (2010) in High Performance Training and a PhD (2016) in Sports Sciences, all from the Faculty of Sport of University of Porto. João is working as exercise physiologist (since 2015) at the Department of Performance Optimization in Sporting Clube de Braga. He started working in reserve team and youth soccer and after 2 years he moved to the first team and became the Head of Sports Science Department. João has been lecturing since 2016 at University of Maia, and he is also a member of the scientific committee of the Research Centre in Sports Sciences, Health Sciences and Human Development (CIDESD). His main research interests focus on evaluating, improving and monitoring the physiological and biomechanical performance determinants of cyclic and team sports. He has published more than 30 papers (peer-reviewed journals) on the topic, and he has worked as an invited reviewer of several impact factor journals.

Co-founder of ParaMedir, Carlos Cordeiro is a biomedical scientist with a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Groningen, an MSc in Biotechnology and a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Algarve. He also holds postgraduate training in Finance (VU Amsterdam) and Entrepreneurship (University of Groningen).
He brings extensive experience in business and product development, as well as project management of large international consortia focused on advancing biomonitoring technologies. Carlos has played a key role in securing substantial public and private funding to support biotech innovation across both academic and industrial settings.
He has led the development of cutting-edge biosensor-based devices for real-time, in vivo biomonitoring. Initially created for use in drug development environments, these technologies are now being adapted for patient monitoring and sports performance applications.
Carlos is currently focused on the development of next-generation biomonitoring tools, leveraging the latest advances in bioelectronics and bioanalytical sciences to push the boundaries of personalized healthcare and performance optimization.

Artistic Gymnastics Women’s Coach, since 1992, currently holding Level IV certification. He has served as National Coordinator (2007-2012) and National Coach (2012-2016) of the Portuguese Gymnastics Federation.
Higher Education Lecturer since 1993, currently a Guest Professor at the Faculty of Human Kinetics.

Gonçalo Neves
Swimming Coach at Associação Louzan Natação.
Graduated in Physical Education from the Higher School of Education of Coimbra, with a Level 3 course from the Portuguese Swimming Federation.
He is one of the coaches responsible for the preparation of the European Swimming Champion in 2024 (Camila Rebelo) and for the bronze medal in Swimming at the 2024 Paralympic Games (Diogo Cancela).
He has been elected four times as the Best National Futsal Coach in the World.

Jorge Braz
Since July 2010, he has been the National Coach of the Men’s Futsal Team and responsible for the European Championship (2022) and World Championship (2021) titles for the Portuguese National Team.
He holds a degree in Physical Education from the Faculty of Sports Science and Physical Education at the University of Porto, and a Master’s in Sports Science, specializing in High-Performance Training.
He has been elected four times as the Best National Futsal Coach in the World.

Inês Viegas
Senior Sports Technician and Coordinator of the Sports Department at the Portuguese Paralympic Committee, since 2017.
Graduated in Sports Science, Master’s in Sports Management, and a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology and Sports Management at the Faculty of Human Kinetics, University of Lisbon.

Gabriel Mendes
Gabriel Mendes has been with the Portuguese Cycling Federation since 2010 and has been the national technical coordinator of the national cycling teams and high performance in all disciplines since 2014. He also serves as the national coach for Track Cycling.
He has achieved international results in European and World Championships and was one of the key figures behind the Olympic title won by Iúri Leitão and Rui Oliveira at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
