Henrique Neiva – Researcher interviewed at 90 Seconds of Science

Professor Henrique Neiva, professor at the University of Beira Interior and researcher at Cidesd – Center for Research in Sport, Health and Human Development, was interviewed for the program “90 Segundos de Ciência” about his research “STUDY EVALUATES IMPACT OF WARM-UP ON PHYSICAL EXERCISE PERFORMANCE”.

This study wants to know how the tasks that precede the performance of physical exercise affect the athlete’s performance.

Henrique Neiva, professor and researcher at the University of Beira Interior (UBI) and member of CIDESD – Center for Research in Sport, Health and Human Development, is studying the impact of sports warm-up on performing physical exercise both in competition and in recreation and leisure.

The idea is to understand which responses are achieved with warm-up and establish a relationship between these physiological variables and task performance.

In this study, physiological responses such as heart rate, lactate, sweating, secretion of hormones such as testosterone and cortisol, oxygen consumption, intracorporeal temperature, and skin temperature are being evaluated.

“Our idea is to try to establish a pattern and an ideal zone spectrum of activation of these responses to achieve the best performance of the following task. If we achieve this, our idea in the future is to establish some partnerships with the business fabric and develop instruments that allow us to measure these responses in real time”, he reveals.

This will allow you to create a personalized warm-up and training regime for each athlete in order to stimulate the areas that will most contribute to greater efficiency in the task to be performed, thus increasing exercise performance and preventing the appearance of injuries.
