Dulce Esteves – Researcher interviewed at 90 Seconds of Science

Professor Dulce Esteves, professor at the University of Beira Interior and researcher at Cidesd – Center for Research in Sport, Health and Human Development, was interviewed for the program “90 Seconds of Science” about her research “MAMA_MOVE PROGRAM USES EXERCISE TO REDUCE THE IMPACT OF CHEMOTHERAPY ON THE HEART”.

This program was designed to support breast cancer survivors.

Dulce Esteves, professor at the Department of Sport Sciences at the University of Beira Interior (UBI) and researcher at the Center for Research in Sport, Health and Human Development (CIDESD), developed the MAMA_MOVE program, an initiative that uses exercise to help survivors of breast cancer in your recovery.

What health benefits can exercise bring? This is the question that drives Dulce Esteves’ work. The researcher is dedicated to studying how exercise can be a non-pharmacological supporting element to delay or improve different pathologies.

Dulce Esteves is currently working in three specific areas, namely, exercise and cancer, exercise and dementia, and exercise and children with autism spectrum disorders.

Over the past seven years, the MAMA_MOVE program has been developed in partnership with the Centro Hospitalar Gaia Espinho. This program is designed for breast cancer survivors.

The goal is to study how exercise can be a protective factor for the heart. During chemotherapy, drugs that have cardiotoxicity are used, that is, these drugs can cause damage to the heart and cardiac tissues.

“This means that patients, after chemotherapy treatment, can have serious heart problems after a number of years. Our idea is that if they do a certain type of exercise they can reduce the prevalence of these side effects. This is our research hypothesis ”, she reveals.

Dulce Esteves hopes that this program’s exercise plan can protect these women’s hearts from the adverse effects of chemotherapy.
