The Youth Physical Development Model 2.0: a new approach to developing our future champions

Rhodri S. Lloyd, PhD, CSCS*D, FNSCA is a Professor of Paediatric Strength and Conditioning and Chair of the Youth Physical Development Centre at Cardiff Metropolitan University. His research interests surround the impact of growth and maturation on long-term athletic development and the neuromuscular mechanisms underpinning training responsiveness and injury risk in young athletes. To date, he has published in excess of 160 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 30 book chapters and three textbooks on the topics of paediatric strength and conditioning and long-term athletic development, including the ACSM’s Essentials of Youth Fitness.

In 2016, Professor Lloyd led the inaugural position statement on long-term athletic development on behalf of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). His research influences the philosophies and programming within the Youth Physical Development Centre, which provides after-school strength and conditioning provision to approximately 130 young athletes. He has previously been recognized both nationally and internationally for his contributions to research and education, receiving the Terry J. Housh Outstanding Young Investigator of the Year, Educator of the Year, and the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research Editorial Excellence awards from the NSCA, and the Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year for Education and Research from the UK Strength and Conditioning Association. In 2021, Professor Lloyd was made a fellow of the NSCA in recognition of his contributions to the association.
